Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about joining our continental association of African chefs, our membership categories, network funding, and our collaboration with AFSA.

We are a continental, non-profit, non-partisan association of African chefs and culinary practitioners. Led by our members, we campaign under the hashtag #MyFoodIsAfrican and work closely with the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) and its members.

Our Secretariat is hosted at the AFSA offices. We work mainly online to connect our pan-African community and meet in person when resources allow.

The official working languages are English, French, and Arabic. Portuguese and Kiswahili may be added as resources allow. We always encourage members to share content in their own local languages.

We are funded through grants, member contributions, fees for events and the “Eat African” label, sales of publications, and donations that meet our principles. The Network does not accept funding, sponsorship, or partnerships that contradict its core principles. Until we are registered as a legal entity, funds are received and managed by AFSA on our behalf.

Anyone who accepts our Charter and meets the criteria for one of our membership categories is welcome to join.

  • Full membership is open to chefs, cooks, traditional food custodians, culinary educators, and food entrepreneurs of African origin, living in Africa or the diaspora.
  • Youth membership is open to culinary students and apprentice chefs aged 18 to 35.
  • Associate and honorary categories are also available for supporting organisations, researchers, journalists, and food elders.
